Whilst my "Illustrated Flora" is not in any way a "Gardeninge Book", the flora of a small, mainly rural, island cannot help being influenced by the escape of planted species from domestic gardens, at least some of which will thrive and multiply in our mild climate. In return many native "Wild flower" species will be found in these gardens where some of them are treated as a curse, but others are welcomed by the owners and make a good show of various coloured foliage or, when in flower, welcome colour, throughout the year.

Centuries ago certain "weeds" were prohibited on agricultural land to avoid contamination of well cared-for land from nearby poor husbandry. A list of these, with about 15 species named, was made into a Mauvaises Herbes law in 1927, making it punishable to have these, in flower or seed, on one's land, both farm and domestic. This has rarely been obeyed since the 1960s by residents or by the States, allowing several of the list to multiply to the point where Hogweed Heracleum sphondylium and the pretty, white-flowered Three-cornered Garlic, ('Stinking Onions') Allium triquetum are so common that they are now beyond extermination. About 15 years ago the law was revised leaving only Ragwort, Senecio jacobea, on the prohibited list. This is poisonous to horses and cattle, which generally eat round it, but if cut and dried in hay can be fatal, especially to young calves.

The quotation below, which I found in an old book, quite by chance many years ago, seems quite apposite at the end of this contribution to the records of our island's wild flowers.

TO THE READER

"Thus have I ended my booke...and yf to some I shall seeme not fullye to have satisfied their desyres herein accordinge to their expectation or not so cunningly have handled the same as the matter itself offereth and is worthy of, then I referre my selfe wholye to ye learned correction of the wise, desyrynge thrym frendelye to geeve knowledge to the printer, or to me, and beinge detected of my fault, wyll wyllynngelye correct and amend the same: for well I wotte that no treatise can alwaies so workmanly be handeled but that somewhat sometimes may fall out amisse contrary both to the minde of the wryter and contrary to the expectation of the reader. Wherefore my petition to the gentle reader is to accept these my trevails with that minde I do offer them to thee and to take gentelye that I geeve gladly, in so doing I shal thinke my paynes well bestowed and shal be encouraged hereafter to trust more, unto thy curtsye. And therefore I cravve at thy handes the thankefull acceptance of these rude labours of myne. The favour of God bee with thee alwayes."
